Soccer has its roots in ancient games like Cuju, which was popular in China around 400 BC. The mascot for the 1998 FIFA World Cup in France was a cockerel (or rooster) named Footix. The most prolific goal-scorer in the North American Soccer League was Italian Giorgio Chinaglia of the New York Cosmos: 242 goals in 254 games. The first appearance of organized women's soccer in the US may have been in 1922, when a team sponsored by English company Dick, Kerr toured the country -and beat several top men's teams. The 1970 World Cup was the first to be televised in color.
