The U.S. Governing body for the sport did not have soccer in its name until 1945, when it became the U.S. Soccer Football Association. The 1934 and 1990 World Cups were held in Italy. The current World Cup trophy will be retired in 2038 when there is no more room for the champion's name. Substitutions were allowed for the first time in the 1970 World Cup. The United States Women's national team played its first-ever international soccer match on August 18, 1985 against Italy near Venice.
