England's Football Association first legalized professional soccer players in 1885. The mascots for the 2002 FIFA World Cup in Korea/Japan were futuristic, computer-generated creatures named Ato, Kaz and Nik. In the early years of of the game, American soccer was dominated by teams from New England, particularly Fall River, New Bedford and Pawtucket. The team sponsored by Bethlehem Steel won four out of the first six US Open Cup tournaments- 1915, '16, '18 and '19. Of the 16 members of the USA's first World Cup team in 1930, five were born in Scotland and one in England.
