The United States joined FIFA in 1913. The mascot for the 1982 FIFA World Cup in Spain was an orange named Naranjito. The African Cup of Nations, the main international football competition in Africa, was first held in 1957. In the early years of of the game, American soccer was dominated by teams from New England, particularly Fall River, New Bedford and Pawtucket. Bora Milutinovic is the only man to coach five World Cups with five different teams: Mexico, Costa Rica, United States, Nigeria and China.
