In 1982, Argentina’s Diego Maradona led his country to the World Cup title. Wearing Puma boots, Maradona scored the spectacular solo goal which will later officially be voted Goal of the Century by FIFA. Maradona is voted “Player of the Tournament”. Puma athlete El Hadji Diouf of Senegal was named “African Footballer of the Year” in 2001. Dutch midfielder Phillip Cocu completed a tournament-leading 283 passes at Euro 2004 while wearing Puma boots. The first soccer league in the United States was the American Football Association, which existed from 1884-88. The current World Cup trophy will be retired in 2038 when there is no more room for the champion's name.
