Soccer has its roots in ancient games like Cuju, which was popular in China around 400 BC. The mascots for the 2002 FIFA World Cup in Korea/Japan were futuristic, computer-generated creatures named Ato, Kaz and Nik. The most prolific goal-scorer in the North American Soccer League was Italian Giorgio Chinaglia of the New York Cosmos: 242 goals in 254 games. The United States has never won a World Cup game on European soil. The United States Women's national team played its first-ever international soccer match on August 18, 1985 against Italy near Venice.
