The U.S. Governing body for the sport did not have soccer in its name until 1945, when it became the U.S. Soccer Football Association. The mascot for the 1990 FIFA World Cup in Italy was a green, white and red stick figure with a soccer ball head named Ciao. The most prolific goal-scorer in the North American Soccer League was Italian Giorgio Chinaglia of the New York Cosmos: 242 goals in 254 games. The North American Soccer League (NASL) existed from 1968 to 1984 with teams in the United States and Canada. The United States has won the Gold Cup four times, including three of the last four titles.
