The Puma Atom, Puma’s first soccer boot, was introduced in 1948. Puma was briefly called Ruda (taken from the name of company founder Rudolph Dassler) until settling on its current name in 1948. At the 1978 World Cup, Argentina’s Mario Kempes led his country to its first World Cup triumph. Kempes is top scorer in the tournament and, like nine other players on the winning team, he wore Puma shoes. The most prolific goal-scorer in the North American Soccer League was Italian Giorgio Chinaglia of the New York Cosmos: 242 goals in 254 games. The name soccer comes from association football, which is the sport's formal name.
