At the 1954 World Cup, adidas founder Adi Dassler adapted the shoes of the German national team to the ground conditions with his revolutionary screw-in studs. Germany won the tournament. The official ball for the 1990 World Cup was the adidas Etrusca. Rules of the Game: The player making a throw-in may not touch the ball again until it has touched another player. The U.S. Governing body for the sport did not have soccer in its name until 1945, when it became the U.S. Soccer Football Association. The Netherlands' Ernie Brandt is the only man to score a goal for both teams in a World Cup game, accomplishing the feat in 1978.
