The United States joined FIFA in 1913. The earliest documented use of the word football appears in a proclamation by King Henry IV of England in 1409. The first non-European nation to join FIFA was South Africa in 1909. The 1934 and 1990 World Cups were held in Italy. The first appearance of organized women's soccer in the US may have been in 1922, when a team sponsored by English company Dick, Kerr toured the country -and beat several top men's teams.
