Rules of the Game: An indirect free kick is awarded to the opposing team if a goalkeeper takes more than six seconds while controlling the ball with his hands before releasing it from his possession. Goalkeeper is the only position to be explicitly part of the rules of the game since they were codified in the 19th century. As of December, 2007, FIFA has 208 member associations -which is 16 more than the United Nations. Unlike the Olympics, FIFA recognizes the four Home Nations of the United Kingdom - England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland- as separate entities. Mexico's Pachuca defeated the LA Galaxy on penalties to win the inaugual North American SuperLiga in 2007.
