Spain's La Liga had its first season in 1928. UEFA (Union of European Football Associations) was founded in Switzerland in 1954 and has 53 members. The North American Soccer League (NASL) existed from 1968 to 1984 with teams in the United States and Canada. The first appearance of organized women's soccer in the US may have been in 1922, when a team sponsored by English company Dick, Kerr toured the country -and beat several top men's teams. The name soccer comes from association football, which is the sport's formal name.
