Italy National Team
Italy has as much passion for, experience in and success at the FIFA World Cup„ as any other nation, save for host Brazil who have one more crown, five in total, than the Azzurri. Four, count them (1934, 1938, 1982 and 2006), four FIFA World Cup„ titles sit in an Italian trophy case, each shining brighter than the one that preceded it. They captured two of the first three tournaments, one of which they hosted, and the 1982 tournament in Spain during which Marco Tardelli€s tears after he scored the winner became one of the most iconic moments in FIFA World Cup„ history. Italy produced a vintage performance in 2006, fighting past Germany in extra time to reach the final, where they defeated France on penalties to claim the glory. They also had historic runs in 1970 and 1994, though they lost both finals to Brazil. Many of those wins were charted via Catenaccio, a classic Italian style of play in which players defend, invite pressure and finally come out of their shell late on to steal the winning goal.
