Barcelona announces summer tour of U.S.
New York, NY (Sports Network) - Barcelona, La Liga's top club, and Soccer United Marketing announced Wednesday that the teams will face the New York Red Bulls as part of a three game tour of the United States.
The U.S. summer tour is the first for Barcelona since 2003.
The Spanish club will play Mexican clubs in Los Angeles and Houston and finish its tour Saturday, August 12, with a Major League Soccer matchup against the New York Red Bulls.
"Major League Soccer and Soccer United Marketing are honored to bring Barcelona’s exhilarating style of play to our fans. For many, this FC Barcelona Tour will be a once-in-a-lifetime experience," MLS Commissioner and SUM CEO Don Garber said.
The club will start the trip in Los Angeles Sunday, August 6, and will move to Houston Wednesday, August 9 before the match with the New York Red Bulls.
Barcelona features some of the world's premier players, including FIFA World Player of the Year Ronaldinho along with Samuel Eto'o and Lionel Messi. As of week 32 in the Spanish schedule, Barcelona holds an 11 point lead for first place over Real Madrid. Only six games remain on the Spanish schedule.
Barcelona has also moved on to the UEFA Champions Cup semifinal stage. The club meets Serie A AC Milan in the first of two legs April 18 in Milan, Italy.
"We are sure that, with the cooperation of MLS, Barca will become more recognizable among the North American public. We also believe that the presence of our team and our star players will assist the promotion and growth of soccer in the United States," Barcelona President Joan Laporta said.

sorry for the dissapointment ...but usually when the big teams like Barca come to the U.S. on their yearly tours, the big names like Ronaldinho usually dont come. Especially with the World Cup this summer ...he's not going to be with his club. He'll be with with his national team over in Germany!

mexican teams are going to play a little bit better than us clubs. but im with the chance that big premier players like ronaldinho arent going to come.

I guess none of you ronaldinho fans saw his below average performance in World Cup 2006??? I mean - Where was he?? Forza Italia!
Posted by: MC | July 18, 2006 06:04 PM
Yo I am sooooo tired of hearing people criticizing him. RONALDINHO IS SEXY HOT AND IS THE GREATEST SOCCER PLAYER ALIVE AMOUNG OTHERS! So what if he messed up a couple of times, the guy is only human you know. Besides, he said once that he didn't really have any intentions on making goles. His job was to pass the ball to others because he is an awesome passer and dribbler. And not only that, but he helped Ronaldo achive his 15 goles, that was also part of his job. HE HAS AWESOME SOCCER SKILLS AND THE CUTEST TOOTHY GRIN EVER...BARCELONA WILL SO WIN ALL THE GAMES, therefoe deal with it people...
Posted by: Linda | July 23, 2006 01:29 AM
Yeah no matter how Ronaldinho performed in WC 06' he is still the legend. He is not like Zidane who helped france to advance to the final from the penalty kick against Portugal.
Zidane Sucks! Ronaldinho Rocks!

Can anyone provide a link to an official statement from the press that confirms the Barca stars, like Ronaldinho, MEssi, etc will play in the tour?
Posted by: JoDaddy | July 28, 2006 12:49 PM
This news release on July 28, 2006 confirms that the stars will indeed be playing in the U.S. tour...Ronaldinho, Messi, Eto'o, Gudjohnsen (just signed from Chelsea). I'm an Arsenal fan, but there is no way I will miss this match in LA. There appears to be plenty of tickets available. I hope the match comes close to selling out, though the LA Coliseum is quite big.

Looks like all of General Admission is sold out (which encompasses much of the north and west sides of the stadium). This will be an awesome match. Real Madrid just announced a match in Seattle vs. DC United. That would be awesome to see as well...Beckham, Nistelrooy, Ronaldo, Emerson, Roberto Carlos, Robinho, Raul...

I read on the Barca website that there is going to be a Nike event on Sat. 5th on Hollywood blvd, does anyone know where on Hollywood Blvd.?
Posted by: ES | August 1, 2006 01:13 AM
Wish Zidane was still playing with Real! Best player in the last 20 years since Maradona, Zidane is the master who turned soccer into an art!! So classy the guy!!! It's like he's playing some classical music not playing soccer!!!
Miss you Zidane!!!

Looks like the game in Los Angeles is now officially sold out (at least on Ticketmaster)! Should be awesome to see the Coliseum full on Sunday!

Wow, what a fantastic match and atmosphere last week at Reliant Stadium. My boys were awestruck and had a fantastic time. Worth the drive from New Orleans. I purchased merchandise there, the stand was overrun, they only had one open, and by halftime of the Dynamo v. Galaxy match were almost out of everything. There were at least 150-200 people pushed up against the counter the entire time.
They would have done better opening 4 stands at various quadrants of the lower level, where we were. Finally got what little I could at halftime of the Barca v. America match.
Four "Mano a Mano" grey t-shirts and one Barca t-shirt in navy, with Barca SEWN on in red, horizintally on the left side of the shirt with the badge. Looking for a photo of both.

TO all Americans: If you go to any of the Barca games please bring a bushel of tomatoes and whip them at Samuel Et'o. He deserves it. And if you don't know why, ask somebody.
