Newell’s Old Boys 2 – 4 Velez Sarsfield
Leandro Somoza scored twice as visiting Velez Sarsfield remained perfect with a 4-2 victory at Newell’s Old Boys in a game that produced some violent outbreaks.
Mauro Zarate put Velez ahead when outmaneuvered his man and shot into the top corner despite being surrounded by three defenders in the 17th minute.
Defender Nicolas Spolli headed Newell's level from Ariel Ortega's cross in the 32nd minute.
Leandro Somoza scored from a penalty in the 51st minute and in the next move Zarate -- sent off shortly afterwards for a second bookable offence -- broke down the right and laid the ball on for Sebastian Ereros to tap home for the 3-1.
Ignacio Scocco made things interesting with his 53rd minute goal to cut it to 3-2, but the mistakes kept piling on for the Lepers.
Somoza made it 4-2 when he scored on a controversial penalty, awarded for handball against Adrian Peralta, which aroused the Newell's supporters.
More missiles were hurled on to the pitch, and Velez appeared ready to abandon the match before changing their minds. Play resumed after a 10-minute break in which several fans got on to the pitch through an open gate near the goal.
Sixteen minutes of stoppage time were added but the scoreboard remained intact and the fans caused no further damage.
The ’94 champions are enjoying the best record ever in an international competition, and will look to book their spot in the quarterfinals May 3rd at home.
