Moreno leads United to first win of season

Jaime Moreno
Washington, D.C. (Sports Network) - Jaime Moreno quickly made week one a memory for Chivas USA as the forward scored two second half goals to give D.C. United a 2-0 win Saturday in their home opener at RFK Stadium.

The United offense seemed to sputter in the first half, but rebounded courtesy of the efforts of Moreno, who scored his first in the 59th, and second in extra time for United's first win of the season.

In week one, United was held in a 2-2 draw with the New York Red Bulls.

For Chivas, there were a number of chances that the team couldn't capitalize on, including a free kick that appeared to have crossed the goal line. Saturday's loss is the team's first since their 3-0 triumph over Real Salt Lake in week one.

The first half started with a quick pace but eventually slowed down, leaving much of the ball possession to the middle of the field. Much of the first half included aggressive play from both sides, as referee Marcel Yonan issued four cautions in the first 45 minutes alone.

The United offense created a number of opportunities, including several corner kicks, but failed to capitalize on each one.

In the second half, both clubs seemed refreshed from the break, especially Chivas, who nearly scored the first goal in the opening minutes.

Juan Francisco Palencia drilled a shot that deflected off the post of the D.C. net in the 49th minute. Chivas players jumped on the deflection, but the play was stopped after a late whistle signaled offside.

Nearly 10 minutes later, United found its best opportunity and scored the first goal of the game. Moreno nearly collided with Chivas goalkeeper Brad Guzan in the 59th minute, but at the last second tapped the ball toward the net. The slow roller found its way into the center of the Chivas net, giving United the second half lead.

In the 82nd minute, United faced their most dangerous moment when Chivas forward Ante Razov was fouled just outside the center of the penalty area by Brian Carroll. Juan Pablo Garcia's free kick after the penalty deflected off the cross bar and bounced on the goal line and then back into play.

D.C. United managed to clear the ball to temporarily end the threat. Video replay later showed the ball may have crossed the line from the deflection, which would have led to the game's equalizer.

As the game neared the 90th minute, the Chivas frustrations appeared to show, when Razov was cautioned in the 89th minute.

Shortly after, substitute Freddy Adu and Moreno took shots on goal, both of which were saved by Guzan.

Moreno put the finishing touches on the win in extra time, with a shot from inside the box on the left side that went just beyond the hands of Guzan and into the net. Moreno's second goal came just before the final whistle, ending a frustrating match for Chivas.

The west coast club returns to The Home Depot Center to face inter-city rival the Los Angeles Galaxy Saturday, April 15. D.C. United remains at home for their first look at the Houston Dynamo on the 15th as well.
