Nowotny Called In For German Session
(Goal.com) - Bayer Leverkusen's Jens Nowotny has suprisingly been called up to the German national squads pre-World Cup fitness sessions scheduled for next week.
"We've been watching Jens closely in recent weeks and have been quite impressed with his performance," said assistant coach Joachim Löw in a statement on Friday. "We now want to take a closer look in the fitness tests."
Bundestrainer Jürgen Klinsmann has invited 18 players to the session in Düsseldorf before naming his World Cup squad on May 15. The Bayern Munich and Schalke 04 contingents will not be present because of DFB Pokal and UEFA Cup commitments. Jens Lehmann of Arsenal will also be absent due to his club's Champions' League semi-final decider with Villarreal in Spain.
Nowotny, crippled by injury in recent years, has played well since returning to the Leverkusen side after a contract dispute. The veteran sweeper, winner of 45 caps, missed the last World Cup through injury.
