Roberto Donadoni Speaks to Goal.com
(Goal.com) - Former AC Milan and MetroStars legend Roberto Donadoni returned to Giants Stadium this past Saturday where he was honored -- along with Pele and a host of other players -- during a pre-game ceremony before the start of the Red Bulls home opener against the New England Revolution.
Goal.com’s Clemente Lisi caught up with Donadoni before the game, where he reminisced about his time with the MetroStars, future coaching prospects and Italy’s chances at the World Cup.
Donadoni began his career with Atalanta in 1982 and was transferred to AC Milan four years later. Donadoni became a mainstay in the AC Milan midfield that went on to win five Serie A titles, three European Champions’ Cups and two Intercontinental Cups. He was also a member of the Italian national team, playing in the 1990 and 1994 World Cups. His missed penalty kick against Argentina in the 1990 World Cup semifinals cost the Italians a chance to reach the final.
In 1996, Donadoni signed with the New York/New Jersey MetroStars, and in doing so he became the biggest foreign star to play in Major League Soccer’s inaugural season. The team made him a centerpiece of the franchise, but he became a victim of his own success. What appeared to be the twilight of Donadoni’s playing career turned out to be a successful continuation. At age 32, he was recalled to the Italian national team to play at the 1996 European Championships. Italy failed to get out of the first round and Donadoni returned to New York.
After two seasons with the MetroStars, Donadoni returned to AC Milan following the 1997 MLS season and helped himself to a sixth Scudetto.
The soft-spoken Donadoni turned to coaching once he retired. He coached Italian clubs Lecco in 2001, Livorno to Serie A promotion in 2002 and Genoa in 2003. Two years later, Donadoni returned to Livorno in mid-season. After leading them to a stunning ninth-place finish and having the club in sixth place midway through the current season, Donadoni resigned in February after he was publicly criticized by team owner Aldo Spinelli.
Goal.com : Livorno has only won one game in the past 13 going into this weekend. How do you feel about the way Livorno’s season is going?
Donadoni : I am really disappointed with what has been going on with Livorno over the past few months. I am mostly disappointed for the players.
Goal.com : Would you return if Spinelli invited you back?
Donadoni : I don’t think that's going to happen.
Goal.com : How does it feel to be back at Giants Stadium?
Donadoni : I have a lot great memories here. Playing here was one of the best times of my life.
Goal.com : Any chance of you coaching the Red Bulls or any other MLS team in the future?
Donadoni : I would like to coach in this league some day. The Red Bulls are one of the best organizations in this league. They want to make the league more popular and that is a very good thing.
Goal.com : Do you ever regret not winning a World Cup?
Donadoni : I don’t look back at Italia ‘90 or USA ‘94 with any disappointment. You only get one, maybe two, chances in a lifetime to play at a World Cup. Playing for a chance to win a World Cup is the best opportunity for a player.
Goal.com : Does Italy have a chance to win the World Cup this summer?
Donadoni : Italy has one of the best teams at this World Cup. The important thing is to have as many players in top physical shape.

Donadoni is great coach, he took a small team like Livorno and surprised many Italians with how well they were doing, it was a big mistake for Spinelli to fire him after all he had done for the team, plus Mazzone is doing a lot worse right now.
