Sluggish start by U.S. Men results in draw

Cary, NC (Sports Network) - There was a lot expected of the U.S. Men's National Team on Tuesday night when it walked onto SAS Soccer Park field to face Jamaica for one of its final friendly matches before the June World Cup tournament in Germany.
It wasn't so much the 1-1 result which was disappointing, but the fact that it was the last chance for many of the bubble players to shine in an effort to make the World Cup roster.
U.S. coach Bruce Arena is expected to release a 35-man World Cup player pool on Wednesday. From the pool, on May 2, the manager will select 23 players who will make the trip to Germany for the World Cup.
However, it appeared that many of the U.S. players did not play with the urgency needed to secure a ticket to Germany. In just the sixth minute, Teafore Bennett ran right through the U.S. defense to give Jamaica a 1-0 edge. Jermaine Hue dribbled the ball up to midfield and sent a through pass to Teafore, who beat an offsides trap and goalkeeper Tony Meola down low in a one-on-one situation.
Ben Olsen, of D.C. United, knotted the match at one in the 27th minute for the Americans. Landon Donovan ignited the goal by quickly sending a free kick in the direction of Olsen. Olsen was able to dribble the ball in the box and from 15 yards out, found the back of the net down low into the far corner.
The U.S. finished the match with 11 corner kicks, but only managed three total shots on goal.
In the final minute of stoppage time, Donovan had a free kick from 20 yards away, but his shot was deflected over the net. He took the ensuing corner kick, but that was booted out of the box by a Jamaican defender as the whistle blew.
It was an historic night for Meola, who is fighting for a spot on the roster. The New York Red Bulls representative became the first U.S. goalkeeper to pick up his 100th cap, and the ninth overall U.S. player to reach that plateau.
Overall, the U.S. has done well against Jamaica, with nine wins and eight draws in 17 meetings. The two teams previously met in the 2005 Gold Cup, where the U.S. scored three goals for the 3-1 win.
The U.S. team has three more friendly matches before the 2006 FIFA World Cup.
