The battle begins: Arsenal, Tottenham meet in derby

Tottenham's Paul Robinson
London, England (Sports Network) - After a 1-0 win in Wednesday's Champions League first- leg match, Premiership's fifth place Arsenal will attempt to minimize a mere four point lead held by Tottenham when the two teams meet in league action Saturday at Highbury.

The Premiership returns for a full slate of matches scheduled over a four day period. The weekend schedule features the majority of the teams playing in league games, while others will compete in the FA Cup semifinals.

With Chelsea having nearly secured its second consecutive league title, and Manchester United and Liverpool both holding strong leads for the second and third place spots, only one Champions League birth remains.

But after a strong start over Villarreal in the tournament, Arsenal will attempt to minimize the lead for the fourth place spot in front of the home crowd.

Saturday marks the 151st meeting overall between the two clubs. Arsenal holds a strong record when facing the Spurs at home, going unbeaten in the last 12 meetings at Highbury.

Arsenal will need to earn wins in the remaining league matches if they are to even have a chance at the fourth place spot. In the last nine years under the lead of head coach Arsene Wenger, Arsenal has never finished below either the first or second place spots.

The Gunners face a Tottenham club that is looking to finish in the league's top six spots for the first time in its history. With 17 wins and 61 points, the Spurs would increase their chances of sealing the fourth place spot with a win Saturday.

"We want it for ourselves, the club and especially the fans. We know how much it means to everyone," goalkeeper Paul Robinson told the club's website.

Though the league offers the top four teams a spot in next season's Champions League tournament, Tottenham's spot could be threatened if Arsenal goes on to win the Champions League' final match.

But until then, the club will have to focus on the remaining three matches in the Premiership.

The only time the Spurs have posted a win at Highbury was nearly 13 years ago, when the club handed Arsenal a 3-1 loss in May 1993.

Both clubs enter the weekend match with numerous holes in the lineups. Arsenal defender Sol Campbell could miss after breaking his nose during the match against Portsmouth. Ashley Cole's return has been delayed by two weeks, forcing him to miss Saturday's match.

Edgar Davids and Anthony Gardner could both be ruled out of the weekend meeting for Tottenham. Davids has an ankle injury, and Gardner is suffering from a shin injury. Jermaine Jenas could also miss after suffering a shin injury during a training session.

A win would push the Spurs to 64 points, the team's best showing in the Premiership.

Also on Saturday; Bolton will attempt its 14th league win against Charlton, a win could promote the team to as high as seventh place; Everton faces 17th place Birmingham, a loss from the 17th place club could see it dangerously close to losing its spot in the league.

Striker Michael Owen is expected to return to the field for Newcastle as the club faces West Brom. Alan Shearer will reportedly miss the rest of the season after suffering ligament damage. A win from Newcastle could bring the club to sixth place.

Portsmouth will try for its ninth win against Sunderland to finish Saturday's schedule, Harry Redknapp's club is trying to avoid relegation.

On Monday, Fulham faces Wigan, and on Tuesday, Aston Villa hosts Manchester City.

West Ham and Liverpool finish the league's schedule with a match on Wednesday.

Chelsea and Liverpool meet Saturday in the FA Cup, and Middlesbrough faces West Ham in tournament action on Sunday.
