one surprise here: no Twellman. Ching has been hot in the MLS, maybe he can continue his streak all the way to June and make that move pay off.

Otherwise, no big surprises. I wish that Johnathan Spector had not been hurt at the end of the EPL season. He would have been a good selection over Hejduk or Conrad.

Yep, I would have guessed Twellman over Ching. I'm sure that was a tough one for Arena. If you think about it, Twellman tends be a little timid and a non-factor at times. Ching has had some great games recently and makes those clutch plays. Maybe we'll see them side-by-side in 2010.

my pick for starters:
keller, bocanegra, onyewu, pope, lewis, mastroeni, donovan, beasley, reyna, mcbride, eddie johnson

O'Brien, Convey, Cherundolo and GIbbs could also see a lot of action.

DUDE, not cool. Why is Brian Ching on the roster and Twellman not??? By the way, it would have been cool if Freddy Adu made the roster but, oh well...

Adu is not ready. He'll have plenty of chances in the future, but there's a reason why he didn't even make the alternate list.
I am surprised about CHing though.

I have to admit, I'm surprised and disappointed to see Twellman out of the 23. I agree that he tends to go missing for portions of the game at times, but then again, that is a characteristic of a lot of the top strikers in the world. Take Ronaldo for example... He'll be MIA for 80 minutes, but it's what he does in that other 10 that makes him special and dangerous. Twellman just finds a way to score (great timing and power in the air, opportunist in the box, high pressure on the opposing defense). It's not always pretty, and you don't always get a full 90 from him, but what you do get is production. That said, I think the inclusion of Ching (in addition to a recent run of good form) hints at what Arena is going for overall. You can see it at several positions, Arena is building a big, strong and fast team. He wants to put an 11 on the field that will not be outmatched physically and that will be able to capitalize on set pieces. Gibbs, Onyewu and Ching are all chosen for physically dominant players, Wolf for a little more pace up front (then you have all the other players that were locks to begin with). Just think of this... who wants to try and defend a corner or a set piece delivered by Landon Donovan against a team that could potentially have Pope, Onyewu, Gibbs, McBride and/or Ching in the box with quick and crafty players like Dempsey, Convey or Johnson scurrying around to cleanup after the arial carnage? There's a method to the madness, though I still wanted to see Twellman over either Ching or Wolf.

Where's Twellman? He's one of the most consistant players the team has to offer, and his chemistry with donovan is incredible as they showed in the all star game last year.

I am shocked but not suprise that Twellman didnt make it. why because both Twellman and Mcbride are similiar types of players mainly scoring with their heads. Ching brings a more diverse type of offense, because he can pressure the defense and has amazing pace while attacking.I do love the fact that he takes Oguchi Onyewu, because he proved himself during qualifying and especially against Mexico as well as in the Gold Cup. Hopefully this team can surpass the bar set by the 2002 team. Becuase their much more talented, deeper, younger and better as a team.

ching is way better than twellman so im glad he made the roster. spector would have been awesome but oh well. lewis will have an amazing world cup but i feel it will be his last.

Wow USa is gona get pwned !!! Just watch and see!

As far as im concerned freddy adu shouldn't be a topic here. He is the most overated player i've ever seen. He doesn't even belong in mls, and yet for some reason people are upset that hes not on the world cup team. Well as most of us know, this is probably the best team the US has ever taken to a world cup. Its such a shame they get screwed with the groupings, when England's group the next best team is sweden, with paraguay and trinidad and tobago rounding it out, inwhich both of those teams the US have beaten. And yet czech republic, italy, and the united states are put in the same group together. Three teams that deserve to get out of any group, its just a shame one of them will be left behind and sent home early.

I think the us team will b good. Twellman probably should be on the roster but either way they are goin to be tuff. To bad Brazil has the problem all coaches want "Which all star forwards am I goin to start today." Adu is just too young to show how good he is but if you put him on the alternate roster you might be able to get him in and get him experience for the future.

I think Bruce Arena made a good choice with Ching but Twellman would have also been a good addition because of the way he can magically score. Even though he didn't make this World Cup he has a good shot at the next one.

u.s.a has a really bad team and they wont even make it to the second round. u.s.a is the cheapest team in the world cup. viva mexico !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ok team i think well make it to semi's but hard to tell though i still think twellman should be on it cuz ching sucks.

mexico sux, usa all the way

I BELIEVE the usa head coach made a good selection but they were to include a young telent like adu to get some world cup experience for the future. In short usa will have a good results at the worrld this year likely coming out of thier zone with ghana.good luck usa soccer squad.

Twellman should have been over Ching, Ching has done nothin for the U.S. national team

I like Ching over Twellman. I'm not a fan of either of them personally, Twellman is inconsistent, not just within 90 minutes but from game to game. The same could be said about Ching, but...he's big, enough said. Adu hasnt spent enough time competing with people at his level yet, he's just a kid.

twellman defantly
go us good luck

Hey does anyone know what channels on TV that most of the World Cup games will be viewed. I live out at North Shore, Oahu, Hawaii. Or can anyone point me in the right direction to look. Thanks

adu isnt a good add. hes only what.. 17.. he has another 20+ years to go to W.C.. and ching is good but still.. twellman is good too.. ithink they both shoulda been on.. and the games will be on ESPN @ ESPN2..along w/ Fox soccer channel.. kick some a$$ USA!

I agree with a majority of the comments thus far. I belive Arena has made some very good decisions bsaed on experience, physical size, and over all skill. Twellman or Ching, i think Arena made his decision for some reason and we just have to watch and see. I do, however, think that placing Adu on the national team would be a mistake. As good a player as he is, he just doesn't have enough experience on the professional level to be palying against the world greats like Rooney, Ronaldinho, Ronaldo, etc. I believe we'll see Adu on the team in the very near future, but for the time being we must rely on the team Arena has chosen.

i hope they can atleast win one game..

Lets who can get out of the group of death

If Adu was really as good as people say he would be on the USA team at a young age like ronaldo , pele , messi ,rooney and others . I think he,s overrated and he's probably not even 17 more like 21, he's from ghana , they don't exactly have birth certificates over there you know!!!
BRASIL CAMPEÃO !!!!!!!!!! Mexico sux

No kidding Brasil, that kid Adu is a liar concerning his age.
When he signed he was way over 14, he was more like 18 or 19.
As you said, who keeps birth records in Ghana?
Since he is actually 21 or so, he is not an up and coming kid, he potential has already been realized. Bye bye Freddy.

HaHAHAHA yes! people who hate freddy adu as much as i do, this is great!
