Copa Libertadores: Chivas advance despite loss
(Soccer365.com) - Both Colombian sides are eliminated from the Copa Libertadores, as Liga de Quito and Guadalajara are the first two into the quarterfinals.
Santa Fe 3 – 1 Guadalajara
The Guadalajara squad struggled in Colombia against a fiery Independiente Santa Fe squad that won 3-1, but the home win last week was enough to see them through by the slightest of margins, 4-3 aggregate.
Hector Reynoso Lopez headed in the all-important Chivas goal Tuesday in the 11th minute.
Then los Cardenales struck the net three times to make the goats sweat in Bogota after they had a comfortable lead in the series.
Santa Fe ace, Leider Preciado, snuck in to score the first home goal in the 36th minute, striker Jose Largache netted in the 50th and defender, David Montoya drilled a penalty in the 86th for the 3-1.
Guadalajara’s next foe will no doubt be unbeaten Velez Sarsfield in the next round.
Atletico Nacional 0 – 1 LDU
Liga Deportiva Universitaria of Quito, Ecuador, easily handled Colombia’s Atletico Nacional 1-0 Tuesday as visitors to advance to the quarterfinals with a resounding 5-0 aggregate score.
The first Colombian team to win the Copa Libertadores, Atletico Nacional in ’89, did not put up much of a fight, as national team ace Edison Mendez’s goal was enough to earn the victory.
For the Ecuadorians, who have a large contingent of national team players who are getting good World Cup ’06 training, this is their best performance since making the semis in the ’76 edition.
