Coppa Italia Reaction: Mancio's Tenth Not So Sweet

(Goal.com) - Roberto Mancini's record 10th triumph in the Coppa Italia - four as a coach, six as a player - was not all sweetness and light.

Despite guiding Internazionale to their second successive Coppa triumph and so ensuring silverware for the Inter trophy cabinet, Mancini's sense of achievement was muted by the displeasure of some Nerazzurri fansand overshadowed by the scandal that is rocking Italian football.

After the 3-1 win over Roma at the San Siro, which made it a 4-2 aggegate victory, Mamcini said:

“I am happy for the lads, as over the past month there have been several disappointments and they deserved to celebrate.”

However, the Inter fans left during the ceremony, having unfurled a large banner that read: ‘Enjoy your meaningless Cup, it won’t bring back your dignity.’

The coach added: “We went out of the Champions League in a horrible manner, even if Arsenal were even worse than us against Villarreal, yet still qualified. I can’t talk about our performance in Serie A, as that is a different matter.”

He has been vocal in his criticism of Juventus and the recent scandal has raisedserious questions about Juve's relationship with referees.

“Perhaps Inter would’ve won more over the past few years, but not just us, other clubs too. I want to see to which depth we have sunk.”

Juve coach Fabio Capello continues to be linked with the Inter job for next season, suggesting that winning two Coppa Italias and the Italian Super Cup may not be enough to keep Mancini in his post.

Meanwhile, Inter captain Javier Zanetti said: “I wasn’t here to lift the trophy last year as I was on international duty, so it’s very special for me. We wanted this competition and the fans should join us in enjoying it.”

Roma coach Luciano Spalletti had to cope with yet more debilitating injuries in his squad and it ultimately cost them as Roma lost to Inter in the Coppa Italia final for the second consecutive season.

“We had reacted well to Inter’s first goal and were in the running, but that goal on the counter-attack effectively created some problems for us,” he said.

But he has won admirers for getting Roma to the Final, and into the running for fourth place in Serie, despite all the injuries.

Suspensions and a full treatment room have left Spalletti with limited playing resources for most of the season, and it was the same for the final. Simone Perrotta, Rodrigo Taddei and Philippe Mexes were all suspended for the second-leg, while Daniele De Rossi was struck down by flu and was seen coughing repeatedly on the bench during the game.

“I think Roma can be satisfied with this season, although I haven’t looked for alibis throughout the campaign and I don’t want to start now. Of course, being here with De Rossi would’ve probably changed the match to a degree, as he is a player of great character. Unfortunately, we lost him as well,” added Spalletti.

But the good news for the Giallorossi was that captain Francesco Totti made his comeback as a substitute, 81 days after undergoing surgery on a fractured ankle.

“Francesco hasn’t got 90 minutes in his legs and we both decided it was better this way. Unfortunately, by the time he came on, the game was practically sealed, as it was tough to come back from 2-0 down. At least he looked confident and this bodes well for his recovery.”

Roma's Damiano Tommasi congratulated Inter on their second straight Coppa Italia success. “Perhaps we deserved something more in the first leg, but Inter were worth their win tonight, even if the margin is a bit heavy, all things considered,” said the midfielder.

Asked about the scandal engulfing Juventus and their allegedly close rapport with referees, Tommasi commented: “The passion for football will always exist. Everyone feels the need to clarify the situation, but that is merely evidence of how much we all care about this sport. I think things need to be done in the open.”
