England Can Wait On Rooney, Say FIFA
(Goal.com) - World football’s governing body FIFA have announced that England can wait until June 9 to replace Wayne Rooney.
The Manchester United striker appears unlikely to play at the World Cup after breaking a metatarsal bone in the 3-0 defeat by Chelsea at the weekend.
But instead of having to replace injured players by the May 15th deadline, England boss Sven-Goran Eriksson will have until the day before the opening game against Paraguay.
"Coaches will have players who are crucial to their team and who they hope will be fit in time for the tournament and this gives them a chance to recover fully right up to the beginning of their team's World Cup,” a FIFA spokesman told the Daily Telegraph.
"That provision is there for any player, provided a medical certificate confirms the injury."

I think that sucks for him because he is a really good player I think that he is going to be the or was going to be the best player of the world cup

Yeah, it would have been cool to see him play on the national team. They should probably just pull him off the roster now. Those types of injuries don't heal that quickly. Look at Owen just coming back now...and still not 100%. Of course I'm no medical expert so maybe Rooney's break is different.

I hope Rooney makes it back.

I think in the future, the world cup shouldn't start so soon after the club season. Maybe at the end of june instead of early june. We are seeing a lot of major players that the world is dying to see in the competition go down with injuries so close to the tournament. Think of how many players would benefit with from that extra time, Rooney, Totti, Messi, Cahill just to name a few.

Good point ForzaItalia. If we have to wait 4 years b/w tournaments, it only gives players 3, maybe 4 chances to play in the world cup. It seems like such a shame for players and the fans too, that some of the highest quality stars would be left out of the competition.
