G6 Team Profile: COSTA RICA

Costa Rica World Cup Team
Costa Rica’s team has been compared to a plane not quite ready for takeoff. Los Ticos have been trailing behind in friendly matches leading up to the World Cup, with performances that leave fans anxious and disappointed. But with a seemingly stellar lineup of players and a strong team ethic, they are on the verge of truly taking flight.

Gilberto Martinez (Brescia) is a fearless defender who started all three games in the 2002 World Cup. Proving his abilities, he now bears the burden of sorting out the defense for 2006.

Front man Paulo Wanchope (Al-Garafah) has emerged as Costa Rica’s biggest star, becoming the all-time leading goal scorer in Ticos history. While he remains their biggest goal threat, the veteran striker will retire after finals, hoping to inspire his side to go out with a bang reminiscent of their debut performance in Italy 90.

Other team fixtures like midfielder Walter Centeno (Saprissa) and second all-time goal-scorer Rolando Fonseca (CSD Comunicaciones) should provide solid play, with the help of midfielder Jafet Soto’s reliable service. Winger Cristian Bolaños (Saprissa) will be another player likely to shine; he is rated as one of the best young players in the CONCACAF region.

As they embark on their third World Cup, the Ticos’ enthusiasm is as steadfast as it has been in the past finals, where they have proved their abilities. While they may be off to a slow start in recent friendlies, Costa Rica could cause an upset in Group A once they get their act together.
