G6 Team Profile: PARAGUAY

For a team that has suffered from disappointing performances along the way, Paraguay is hoping that the third time truly is a charm. The Albirroja will be making their third World Cup appearance since Mexico ’86, drawing on an anti-climactic past as they push forward toward a future with more promising results.
Fans should be able to count on an impressive performance by Nelson Valdez (Werder Bremen), one of the brightest young talents in South America. His outstanding four years in the German Bundesliga have earned him praise as one of the league’s best strikers, while securing him with a starting spot on Paraguay’s team. Though only 22 years old, Valdez seems able to carry the weight on his shoulders to help his side succeed in Germany.
Captain Carlos Gamarra (Palmeiras) never fails as a strong leader, but his inconsistency in tackling rarely earns him the respect he deserves. However, "El Colorado” is a veteran of two World Cups and has played in seven different countries during the course of his career, exposing him to a wide range of play and skills. He should be sure to make an impact.
While not as successful in past World Cup finals as they would have hoped, Paraguay has had some important triumphs worth noting. The squad tends to do well in the Copa America, Latin America's most important soccer tournament. They have frequented the runner-up spot and have won the Cup twice (1953 and 1979). Most recently, Paraguay took home the silver medal in men's soccer at the 2004 Olympic Games, the first ever Olympic medal in the nation's history.
This summer, the team will rely on their strong teamwork and recent consistency to become a threat in Germany.
