G6 Team Profile: POLAND

For many, the most familiar player for Poland this summer will be one who has spent much of the past year riding the bench. The hero for Liverpool in the Champions League last year, Jerzy Dudek hasn’t seen much playing time this season after losing his starting job. Still, he remains one of the game’s top keepers and will be in the nets for Poland in Germany.
At the other end, look for Tomasz Frankowski (Wolverhampton) to lead the attack. Though 31 years old, he seems to have found his groove, a fact to which his seven goals during qualifying will attest. Frankowski’s partner up top will likely be Maciej Zurawski (Celtic). A prolific goal-scorer in the Polish league, he is now among the hottest in the Scottish Premier League. Emmanuel Olisadebe (Portsmouth), a naturalized Pole born in Nigeria, and Grzegorz Rasiak (Southampton) give the team other options in attack.
The star of the midfield will likely be Jacek Krzynowek (Bayer Leverkusen) while experienced defender and team captain Tomasz Klos (Wisla Krakow) will anchor the back line.
Poland is not a team loaded with international stars but they are solid at every position and will certainly not be pushovers (as they essentially were in 2002). If popular coach Pawel Janas can pull them together to play as a cohesive unit then Poland just might go far. Maybe not as far as 1974, when they finished third, but the second round is definitely within reach.
