Lavolpe: only WC debut matters

(Soccer365.com) - Mexico's coach downplays the importance of the international friendlies as the team prepares for their June 11th match versus Iran.

After losing 1-0 to France and getting ready to face Holland Thursday, Mexican national team coach, Ricardo La Volpe, said the only thing that matters is the World Cup 2006 debut, not so much the team’s performance in the friendlies.

For the Argentinean coach, the important date will be June 11th, when El Tri will face Iran in their World Cup ’06 kick off.

La Volpe, who had not spoken to the media since arriving in Europe, made it clear that “we can’t forget that what really matters to us is the first match in the World Cup.”

After the team ended Sunday’s training session in the Netherlands, the coach asserted that after three years at the Mexican team’s helm, he knows what their objective and how his players will respond on the field.

“We know what this team is about, as we’ve worked together for three years and I know I have 23 players who will leave it all on the pitch.”

La Volpe added that they are only concerned for their own actions, not what the other teams are doing. “To be a great team we can only worry about what we are doing.”

Yeah we'll see. Mexico always seems to pop under pressure. Like I tell everyone, as long as they get the kinks out now and not lose in the actual cup. Mexico Lets Go!

the US will top the group, beat Croatia, then beat the swiz, then make it to the semi's, we will beat the english, make it to the finals and beat brazil 1-0!

I think that Mexico will do better this year, I also believe that they will fallow the example that the U-17 gave, World Champions.
VAMOS MEXICO SI SE PUEDE!!!!

What do the u17s, winning the world championships have to do with the mens team? You cant compair little boys amoung the worlds best. Sorry but mexico gets to the second round at best.

speaking as a world-class expert..i say mexico will squeeze by portugal and win the group. after a grueling second round match which will end in extra-time, the mexicans will reach the quarter-finals and maybe make it to the semi-final as the "black horse" of the tournament.
and of course..."VIVA MEXICO!!! SI SE PUEDE!!"

the truth is that MExico will come in second to the group. lose to holland in the next round 2-0 and will go home to eat burritos!!!!!!!!!

no no no the truth is that mexico will top their group for they have such a great team in this FIFa WC. plus mexico along with the USA will be one of the best national teams in the world starting this world cup, the US and the MEX. teams are becoming powerful everyday.Concacaf will have two powerful nations that conmebol and uefa will fear!
GO TEAM USA AND TEAM MEXICO

i think Mexico will get first in the group, squueze by the Netherlands and lose in the Semi-Final. They are lacking goal scorers up top Borgetti cant do it all by himself

Mexico is a strong squad however it is their fate and all their actions will count on them a failure would be a diasapointment a victory would make them heros VIVA MEXICO SI SE PUEDE

why would 85% of the posts we're commenting be about mexico if they were not going to do well of course they will do well

MEXICO HAS A STRONG TEAM OMAR BRAVO, BORGETTI,MASA RODRIGUEZ,OSWALD SANCHEZ, AND SOME OTHER PLAYERS REALLY MAKE A GOOD TEAM

MEXICO WILL MAKE IT TOO THE FINALS AND WILL WIN.

!VIVA MEXICO!

Many "realists" like Brandon said the same thing about Mexico in the Confederations Cup last year and maaann, did we shut their big mouths or what? hahaha. Make no mistake my friends, Mexico will again astonish the world!!!

Let's just face it. Croatia is going to take the WC. Plain and simple. I believe they have some great talent and many teams underestimate them. Watch out for the Croats!

I hope Mexico wins - their goalkeeper is hot :D go mexico!!

At last, soeomne comes up with the "right" answer!
