Libertadores Cup: Velez draw at Guadalajara
(Soccer365.com) - The competition's only match Tuesday saw an undermanned but resilient Chivas squad hold a superior foe to a 0-0 draw.
The quarterfinals of the Libertadores Cup got underway in Guadalajara Tuesday where Velez kept their unbeaten streak going in their ninth game with a dreary 0-0 that puts the Argentineans just where they want to be.
Though the Chivas controlled the ball most of the game, Velez’s efficient defense helped them achieved their objective of not losing the first leg, keeping their unblemished mark in the competition.
Guadalajara began strong on the wings, impeding the visitors from getting comfortable. With so many reserves playing key roles, it was surprising to see that with ten minutes gone, Chivas already had threatened the nets a few times.
After Gaston Sessa cleared a free kick in the 19th minute, the home team unexpectedly changed their approach, attacking from the center, with ineffective predictability.
Velez woke up a bit afterward, and though they did not threaten Luis Michel’s net, they got close.
The second half began sluggishly as both sides were intertwined in the midfield, giving the keepers little to do. The Chivas appeared to get fatigued after playing in two tournaments, knowing they have a game on Thursday. Yet after the 55th they seemed to get a second wind and took control again.
The rematch will be played July 20th in Argentina, something which should help the Guadalajara side, for they should have their six national team players back in the lineup.

I want to say to Chivas that they are a really good team for making it to the quarter finals in the liga Mexicana and in the the Copa Libertadores. Chivas are the best of the world.

I'm cnoahicg U8 this fall in the Southeastern US. I'm conflicted about team size right now.I watch how well the U6 team I coach does just in the basics like dribbling the ball and engaging 1v1 on defense. Our U8 team (5v5 inc GK) has trouble with those two things! It's almost as if having more players on the field absolves the players of personal ownership, or else they have come to the age where they are socially inhibited and worried they will fail.I've started working on positional play but it is another topic that must be taught and use practice time. I've started with trying to go for a diamond for field players one deep defender, wings who run the whole field, and one forward. Problem that pops up is our defender is more likely just to boot the ball forward and not leave the backfield, even with clear field in front of him.I think a lot of it is the parents at this age start hitting the kids (and coach) with a lot of expectations despite being one year removed from playing the herd of cats U6 game.
