Mexican playoffs: Chivas fall at home to Jaguares
(Soccer365.com) - Chivas lose at home and Monarchs shock top-ranked Pachuca
Guadalajara 2 – 3 Chiapas
Playing with a good deal of youngsters as they are also contending for the Copa Libertadores, the Chivas allowed a late goal that sunk them 3-2 against a scrappy Jaguares looking for history.
The flock got on the board first when Edwin Borboa passed to Sergio Avila, who shook off a double-team to bury a cross in the 33rd minute.
Paraguayan attacker, Salvador Cabañas cashed in on a Chivas defensive lapse when he launched a header off a center from Alonso Sandoval.
The felines’ experience showed through in the 51st when goalkeeper “Gato” Ortiz kicked a long clearance, which Cabañas latched onto and drilled hard for the 2-1 lead.
Alberto Medina hit with his right leg off a Bofo Bautista assist in the 85th minute to even the scoreboard.
As the Chivas began feeling some relief with thoughts of a draw, Edoardo Isella found Alonso Sandoval who rifled in with his left foot in the stoppage time to give the cats the away victory.
Now Chivas has to win by at least two goals at Chiapas Saturday, May 6th to advance.
Morelia 2 – 1 Pachuca
They barely made it into the playoffs, and now the Monarchs rose up to nip the top-seeded Tuzos 2-1 at home to grab an edge in the aggregate series.
Uruguyan strike ace Richard Nuñez struck a free kick in the 3rd minute and it looked like the Clausura’s best side would romp at Estadio Morelos.
But the Monarchs had other ideas. Not swayed by Pachuca’s lofty record, Rafael Marquez headed home a Fernando Arce center in the 22nd minute to level the game at 1, where it looked to stay until the 90th minute.
Luis Gabriel Rey was the Monarch of the match, as he buried a stoppage time header to seal the home team’s win and the fans’ celebration.
