Mexican semifinals: San Luis takes Toluca first leg
(Soccer365.com) - San Luis continued to make history as they took game one at champions Toluca.
Toluca 1 - 2 San Luis
San Luis did it again, this time coming into the home of the defending Mexican champions and leaving with a 2-1 win.
Cinderella San Luis is still in the ball, and it’s past midnight.
The game was as expected, rigid and tight, with Toluca riding the speedy Uruguayan striker, #11 Vicente Sanchez, while the visitors had a defensive approach, hoping to avail themselves of any miscues.
In the 41st Leonel Olmedo headed an Angel Reyna corner offering for the goal.
Angel Reyna scored himself in the 62nd minute in a cross that burned the net, and galvanized the Tuneros’ championship hopes.
But the champions were not ready to quit.
They launched a furious attack that ended with the 75th minute Jose Manuel Abundis goal that penetrated a disorganized barrier.
Toluca was back in the game as the lead was cut in half.
However, San Luis kept their poise and withstood a desperate late assault by Abundis and the Devils offense.
Reyna explained that San Luis was better for three simple reasons: “We never despaired, took advantage of spacing and capitalized on our opportunities.”
The decisive second leg will be Saturday, May 13th, at Alfonso Lastras Stadium, where San Luis will be favored to move on to their first final, as Toluca needs to win by at least two goals to advance. A tie would see the Tuneros through.
