Mexico: Pachuca is Clausura '06 Champion
(Soccer365.com) - San Luis put up a strong fight but Richard Nuñez’s penalty kick did them in as Pachuca prevailed 1-0 to lift their fourth title.
Both teams played conservatively, taking few risks during the second leg, played at Pachuca's Hidalgo stadium. Knowing they would win with a tie, Pachuca did little offensively.
Needing the win to advance, San Luis were slightly more inclined to attack. Striker Jesus Mendoza came close in the first half with a shot that Pachuca goalkeeper Miguel Calero palmed safely.
The Tuzos best chance came in the 71st when Luis Angel Landin broke free of his markers but crashed his shot onto a post.
It looked like a replay from the first leg, hotly contested, played mostly in the midfield.
Until the 79th minute, when Andres Chitiva was bowled over by San Luis substitute Angel Reyna and given the dubious maximum penalty.
Uruguayan strike ace Richard Nuñez, held in check by the stifling San Luis defense, came through with the penalty kick for the only goal of the series.
Already having the lead, Pachuca put all their players behind the ball and concentrated on defending their lead.
The Tuneros had little answer to their defensive tactics, and Calero was not troubled again.
Pachuca's previous Mexican titles were the Invierno championships of 1999 and 2001, and the Apertura title of 2003.
Colombian goalkeeper, Miguel Calero, perhaps the finals MVP, dedicated the trophy to the fans: “We’re champions and I believe we deserved it as we played well not only in the regular season but also in the playoffs, and it’s a great reward not just for us but for all these people.”
