MLS Report: Donovan Keeps It Real in Salt Lake
(Goal.com) - Galaxy edge Salt Lake away 3-2 as Wiz and Dynamo nail down key victories.
In Salt Lake, with a goal and two assists from Landon Donovan, the Los Angeles Galaxy upped Real Salt Lake’s winless streak to 17.
Real Salt Lake actually jumped out to an early lead, as Andy Williams found a streaking Jason Kreis for a goal in the 6th minute. However the lead wouldn’t last for long, as Donovan took advantage of a rare Eddie Pope mistake to even the score in the 11th minute.
After tying things up, Los Angeles and their new 4-3-3 formation dominated possession for the first half. In the 26th minute, Chris Albright put his crossing ability on center stage for the U.S. National Team selection on Tuesday. Donovan found Albright on his right, and Albright played the ball from the right corner finding the head of Cobi Jones atop the six-yard box to give L.A. the 2-1 lead.
In the second half, Donovan gathered his second assist on the day as he slipped a beautiful ball to Herculez Gomez for an easy finish. But Salt Lake made a game of it with the substitution of rookie Mehdi Ballouchy into the midfield in the 71st minute..
An active Ballouchy got RSL firing on all cylinders, and brought Salt Lake one goal closer in the 74th minute. Ballouchy found Kreis, who fired it in on the goal from near the L.A. end-line. Amidst cluster in front of the net, Kreis’s ball found second half sub Atiba Harris for the finish. Unfortunately it was a little too late for Real, as the final whistle came before they could get an equalizer.
D.C. United 1, F.C. Dallas 1
After announcing the clubs all-time best IX, D.C. United came out sharp against F.C. Dallas. United took control early with some precision passing, as Alecko Eskandarian crossed a ball over to Josh Gros at the top of the box. Gros then dropped the ball to midfielder Ben Olsen, who launched a left-footed blast from 25-yards out to give the Black-and-Red the 1-0 lead in the 17th minute.
As play evened out later in the half, Dallas knotted the score in the 41st minute. A 25-yard rocket to the lower right hand corner from midfielder Ronnie O’Brien beat D.C. goalkeeper Troy Perkins. Hoops midfielder Mark Wilson was credited with the assist that sent the teams to the locker room tied at one.
United had the better of the chances in the second half, but Dallas ‘keeper Dario Sala refused to let his team go down. D.C.’s best scoring chance came on their first corner kick in the 62nd minute, but Sala blocked a Bobby Boswell header off the goal line. The ball fell to the feet of Josh Gros for the finish; however, Gros was offsides on the play and the score remained even until the final whistle.
Columbus Crew 0, Kansas City Wizards 1
With United’s draw against Dallas, the Kansas City Wizards moved into first place in the Eastern Conference with a 1-0 victory over the Columbus Crew. The Crew were dealt a blow in the 15th minute, as Eddie Gaven was forced to leave the game with an injury. Still the teams played to a fairly even scoreless first half, despite some physical play that lead to a possible fractured nose for K.C. midfielder Sasha Victorine, as well as the substitution of his fellow midfielder Jermaine Hue with a cut lip.
In the 70th minute, the Crew nearly took the lead, as Wizards’ defender Shavar Thomas deflected a Kei Kamara cross towards his teams empty net. Luckily for Kansas City, goalkeeper Bo Oshoniyi was able to poke the ball away with his right foot.
Moments later the Wizards took the lead for good on a counterattack lead out of the back by halftime sub Jack Jewsbury. Jewsbury played the ball up the right side to Victorine who took it to the corner of the Columbus 18-yard box and found a streaking Josh Wolff to his left as Crew ‘keeper Jon Busch came out on him. Wolff placed the ball into the back of the net in the 74th minute for his first of the season and the game’s lone goal.
Colorado Rapids 0, Houston Dynamo 1
Fortunately for Colorado, Brian Ching did not have a hat-trick in the first half this time, but he did give Houston an early lead. Midfielder Dwayne DeRosario found the head of the Dynamo striker on a corner kick initially saved by Rapids ‘keeper Joe Cannon. But the rebound fell to Ching’s feet in the 16th minute for his league leading sixth goal. Still the Colorado Rapids had a good first half that included an energetic performance from Clint Mathis, who started in the midfield for the first time since he left the field when these two met in week one.
The Houston Dynamo took control of possession in the second half after countering for much of the first. The Dynamo’s offense started to find more shots, but few were on target. Then in the 75th minute Colorado nearly evened the score as a Jovan Kirovski free kick from 20-yards out rang the left post of the Houston goal.
Houston continued to dominate possession for the remainder of the match, until forward Alejandro Moreno picked up his second yellow card in the 86th minute. The Rapids tried to take advantage of the man advantage, but the Dynamo held on for the 1-0 victory.
Chivas USA 0, Red Bull New York 0
The Bulls and the Goats played to a scoreless draw at the HomeDepotCenter that had its fair share of excitement. Both goalkeepers turned in solid performances as Chivas ‘keeper Brad Guzan finished the match with five saves, while Tony Meola of the Red Bulls registered seven.
Forward Paco Palencia created several opportunities for Chivas USA on the day, their best coming in the first half. In the 25th minute Palencia played a beautiful cross to midfielder Francisco Mendoza, but some how Mendoza found a way to deflect the pass over the net from six yards out. A few minutes later striker Ante Razov was stopped from a surefire goal on a reaction save by a charging Meola. Eventually New York relaxed and began to control possession as the half went on.
In the second half, the Red Bulls knocked on the door a few times, but were denied by El Guzano. In the 52nd minute Chris Henderson nearly put a shot through the legs of Guzan, but he deflected it out of bounds for a corner kick. Six minutes later, Mike Magee, who came on for an injured Edson Buddle just before the half, put a cross off of the crossbar. When the ball fell back to Magee, the keeper deflected the ball over the post with his foot in a frantic dive to deny New York. In the end, neither team was able to overcome the play of the opposing ‘keepers and each took home a point.
