Reina & Gerrard Scoop Awards Double For Reds

(Goal.com) - Liverpool are celebrating an Awards double to mark the end of another strong domestic campaign. Club captain Steven Gerrard has been named Barclays Player of the Month for April, with Spanish Keeper Pepe Reina claiming the Barclays Golden Gloves Award for the 2005/06 season.

The Reds have had an impressive month, winning 0-2 away at West Brom (01/04), 0-1 at Blackburn (16/01), and beating both Bolton and Aston Villa at home, 1-0 (09/04) and
3-1 (29/04) respectively, with Gerrard scoring twice against David O’Leary’s men and leading from the front throughout April.

Keeper Pepe Reina, who joined Liverpool in July last year kept an impressive 20 clean sheets, more than Edwin Van der Sar (18) and last year’s Golden Glove winner Petr Cech (17). Brad Friedel of Blackburn and Jens Lehman of Arsenal (both 16) completed the top five.

Liverpool enjoyed a highly encouraging season, reaching the Champions League quarter
final, the FA Cup Final and clinching third place in the Barclays Premiership with 82 points.

Barclays Sponsorship Director Matt Appleby said: “To win the Golden Glove in his first Barclays Premiership campaign, and at such a young age, shows Pepe Reina’s potential. He has used this season as a springboard onto the international scene and has seen off the challenge of some world-class players to keep the most clean sheets.

Reina has been part of an outstanding Liverpool defence that will surely build on their success to make a serious challenge for the title. Steven Gerrard has also had a great season, hitting the peak of his form in April. Both are deserved Barclays Award winners.”

If Liverpool could just add another striker that would actually produces consistently, they'd have a shot at the title next year.

I am a big Gerrard fan, but there is no way you can convince me that he had a better April than Thierry Henry. Henry is in unbelievable form for 2 months now.

I'm impressed! You've managed the amlost impossible.
