Soccer365 Q&A With Johnny Heitinga
(Soccer365.com) - Fresh from raising the Gatorade Cup with his teammates, Ajax defender Johnny Heitinga took a moment to speak with Soccer365 about the club’s late season resurrection and his chances of going to World Cup with Oranje.
The team finished 24 points behind repeat champions PSV Eindhoven, but got a measure of revenge by beating the Farmers 2-1 in Rotterdam on Sunday to win their 16th domestic cup.
Ajax also were victorious in the Eredvisie’s new Champions League playoffs, punching their return ticket with series wins over arch nemesis Feyenoord and FC Groningen.
Heitinga has similarly redone his image with a form renaissance in 2006, and caught proper notice: Holland manager Marco van Basten made the versatile back a late addition to his provisional World Cup squad.
Soccer365: How satisfying was it to end the campaign with some big victories?
Johnny Heitinga: For the club, for the team and for myself, it was perfect because this season was not the best for us.
But in the end, we have two prizes: first, the Johan Cruijff Schaal (the preseason cup also won with a 2-1 defeat of PSV), and now the Gatorade Cup. Of course, we also have the Champions League to look forward to.
S365: The supporters gave the team plenty of grief this season, but showed up big at the end of the season. How important is it to have the behind you 100% again?
JH: It is best when the crowd is standing behind you. It is perfect because that’s when you play better football.
S365: Is the “old Ajax” back for next season?
JH: Yes, I think so. Of the last eight games, I think we've won seven. We did well in the playoffs, and played our best in the tough games.
S365: I suppose now you can change your attention towards World Cup?
JH: I will now go to the national team training camp, and then we'll see. Van Basten will fill out the list on the 15th of May, and we will see if I make it.
S365: After a struggle early in the season, your play has returned it’s previous high level. Are you confident of making the final squad?
JH: I'm still hoping. This coming week is big because I can show my skills (to Van Basten).
