Sven: It Could Take A Miracle...
(Goal.com) - Wayne Rooney has "more than one fracture" in his foot and may well need "a miracle" to be fit in time for the World Cup, according to his England coach Sven-Goran Eriksson.
The gloomy prognosis comes after the Manchester United striker had a second scan on his metatarsal.
Eriksson said: "I knew yesterday [Tuesday] that he had more than one fracture. Miracles happen in life now and then, but I don't really know."
United believe Rooney is at least six weeks away from training but Eriksson wants to include him in his 23-man World Cup squad.
The England and Manchester United medical teams meet on Thursday to discuss Rooney's chances of making the finals.
Rooney broke his foot against Chelsea on Saturday and an initial scan after the match revealed only one fracture.
Eriksson added: "I will probably name him on Monday. It will be 26 or maybe 27 players.
"I will not rule him out until the doctors tell me there is no chance. No-one wnats that to happen, everyone hopes he can take part in the World Cup at some stage."

I think in the future, the world cup shouldn't start so close to the end of the club season. Maybe moving it to the end of june. We are seeing a lot of major players that the world is dying to see go down with injury and not have enough time to recover. Think of how many players would benefit from the extra month, Rooney, Totti, Messi, Cahill just to name a few.

I think Rooney's injury is a sign for the USA.
This could be USA's chance to take it all, France did it against Brazil, Maybe we can also.

Though 'tis a pity about Rooney, this is our year. Along with 1966, people will relate England to 2006. We have scorers who can take on this stage and do some damage. Football's comin' home fellas, by the Three Lions. C'mon England!!

I agree with Forzaitalia, i just heard word that hejduk on the usa team won't make it! FIFA maybe should consider doing the competition later, to have everyone at their full strength.

I disagree to some point. Great players are a must, but look at real madrid. they have so many great players its ridiculous, and they arent even on top of la liga. true, barcelonas a great team, but real isnt even giving them a run. capable players are a must, but dont rule out chemistry as a factor. look at how italy struggled in '02 with the great players on their roster. look at how usa beat portugal in '02 when they had the fifa world player of the year figo, rui costa among others. u never know whats gonna happen
