Voice of the Fan: SLEEPING GIANTS

Voice of the Fan feature
Is there a Cinderella in the house? Or should we look no further than the traditional favorites? Soccer fanatic Heath Young provides the voice of a fan looking foward to Germany 2006.

Brazil, Brazil, Brazil…. There are a few nations that dominate the pre-group press in each World Cup. Every four years we hear our fill of Brazil, Germany, Italy, England (except when they embarrassingly failed to qualify in 1994 of course) and Argentina.

Okay, so Brazil has been in the finals in each of the past three World Cups and has won the coveted trophy five times, twice more than any other nation. Alright, so Germany are the host nation, have three titles of their own and have qualified for all but two ever held. You say Italy do them one better having bullied their way into all but one World Cup finals with the same tally of three titles? Alright already, I see your point. Only seven nations have won the World Cup in its history. It’s an exclusive club, and I see why we spend so much time talking about its members. I’m just as impressed with them as the rest of you. But let’s forget about Brazil for a second and think about this. Italy is 14th in the FIFA world rankings. Germany are 19th and are in the midst of considerable controversy under heir Klinsman. England 10th, have only even made it to the final match once, winning their solitary title in 1966 and are now sans savior Wayne Rooney in all likelihood. These are teams we are talking about as legitimate contenders in this year’s finals?

Why is no one speaking loudly of the Netherlands, Spain or France as truly formidable, despite their respective FIFA rankings of 3, 5 and seven? The legendary van Basten’s Netherlands are led by a core of world class players the likes of van Nistelrooy, Arjen Robben, Phillip Cocu and the stalwart goalkeeping of van der Sar. They were certainly impressive in qualifying as well, with 10 wins and 2 draws, including 2-0 defeat of the Czech Republic. Speaking of the Czech Republic, why is it that football pundits the world over seem to tout their significant attacking prowess and their enviable rank of second in the world, yet such talk fades when the subject goes beyond the end of the group stages? King Koller is certainly accustomed to scoring goals on German soil, considering he does it all the time for Borussia Dortmund. Dare I ask why no one gives either of the major CONCACAF nations a chance, despite the United States and Mexico both receiving spots in the top five?

Is this because the FIFA world rankings are about as useful as sunglasses in Seattle? Well, yes! I don’t think anyone will really disagree with me that the FIFA ranking system is…ahem…slightly flawed. Confidence in the ranking system, or more accurately a lack thereof, to a certain extent explains the fact that these teams are heavyweights in world football on paper, yet are not given much of a chance to be in true contention. But is this justified? Should we really treat these nations that are occupying coveted spots atop the table of international football as bumps in the Autobahn to glory, for the more storied sides? If history is to be our judge, absolutely! With the exception of a few dots on the landscape and the aberration of France winning at home in 1998; Brazil, Germany, Argentina and Italy have not only won the majority of past World Cup competitions, they have occupied both spots in the final match almost 70 percent of the time.

So does that mean that there are no Cinderella stories in the making for this World Cup? Should we all just buy Brazil t-shirts and samba all summer? On the contrary. Senegal and South Korea in 2002, Croatia in 1998, Bulgaria in 1994; World Cup lore is as full of the unlikely as it is the expected, at least up until the semis anyway. Besides, it is the colors of every nation and what happens along the way that makes this competition so special throughout the world. A lot can happen in the group stages to send an unexpected party crasher into the second round. So who is your pick to shock the world in Germany this summer? Hardly World Cup newcomers, but I say watch out for Sweden. More on that later, you tell me yours and I’ll tell you mine.

If the FIFA rankings were taken seriously, then the U.S. and Mexico could be taken seriously as contenders, not just possible sleepers. I don't even think the U.S. players and coaches believe they can win.

Holland, as always, look dangerous, but they usually find some way to muck it up. And Spain even worse...

That being said, I'd like to root for the Orange and any underdogs. Give me as many T&T wins as possible. But in the end, I can't help seeing the hosts take on Brazil for the Cup. Boring... yes, but it's realistic. Then again if Greece can win the Euro Championship then maybe a sleeper...Mexico, US, Sweden, can get into the group stage, get hot and win. But I wouldn't bet against Brazil.

I totally agree with you on the FIFA rankings. Not to say I mind the USA being 5th. It helps our credibility...even though many see us just barely squeaking out of the group stage. I'm really pulling for our guys. Second round and beyond. I'm trying to be realistic though. We're going to have to play flawlessly.

Of course I always like seeing new comers like T&T do well too.

I am a huge fan of Brazil,and all I talk about is Brazil.See what I mean. I think this is cool.Brazil wining 3 trophies.I'm happy.See ya!

Well, though I'm not a fan of Brazil, but if I had to bet, I'd bet on the team. Why have only seven nations won the cup? Maybe it's about a tradition.Sure, a team like Sweden, Mexico or even the U.S can go as far as the final ... against one of the exclusive club's members. Then when the new comer finds themselves in the final, they'd be like:'oh my God, we're in the final now, we're going to make a new history'. And while they're still in shock, a team with a World Cup winning history (thus doesn't have a double pressure of winning the cup AND making a new history) will beat them. But then again, there's a possibility of a case of Euro'92 (Wouldn't it ironic if Germany played against T&T in the final, and lost?)

I think one of these teams will win:
brazil, germany, italy, netherlands. so i guess netherlands are the sleeper.

Hey, "whatever" whoever you are, not to make fun of you, but who thinks like that? I find that quite histerical. Do you do comedey?

Just a reminder to everyone who thinks Brazil will win again, every time the world cup has been in Europe, a european team has won...every time. No one really took France seriously until they put it together in '98. Also, the FIFA rankings mean absolutely nothing. One team I would consider a "Sleeper" is Czech Republic. They have the talent and can beat anyone.

Also a good point by "ForzItalia". This tidbit has a lot of people looking to England, Germany, Italy, etc. to step up this year.

England certainly have talent all over the field, but I question their ability to sustain the attack. With Rooney still being quite questionable and Owen not really having much pain-free playing time after his similar injury, I think Sven has taken a big risk in not including Darren Bent and putting Jermain Defoe on the alternate list. That said, they do have a lot of midfielders that can take up the scoring slack in Steven Gerrard, Joe Cole, etc.

Germany have the huge advantage of being the host, which can't be underestimated (as you pointed out with France in 98). However, I think all the controversey surrounding Klinsman, etc. has been an unhealthy distraction and though they will get out of their group, I think the pressure might get to them in the latter rounds.

The Czechs are difficult to ignore with the way they can put up points. I only question their ability to hold a lead in the knockout stages. Blowing a 2-0 lead against Turkey by allowing two goals after the 89th minute, definitely questions their late game concentration.

How come noone mentined Ukraine. Worth taking a look. The same with the Ivory Coast.
As far as the winner, Brazil, Czechs, Holland, Italy... Hey, 2006 will be a Great One!
