Germany, Italy Advance to Semis
Germany got a late goal and a penalty kick triumph over Argentina to send the hosts through to the semi-finals. The Germans will face Italy, who blanked Ukraine, 3-0.
Miroslav Klose scored his 5th goal of the tournament to draw Germany level in the 80th minute. Roberto Ayala had put Argentina ahead early in the second half with a beautiful header off a corner kick. But Argentina could not hold off the hosts. Both teams were spent physically in the extra time periods, so the match went to a penalty kick shootout. Oliver Neuville, Michael Ballack, Lukas Podolski and Tim Borowski all beat back-up Argentine keeper Leo Franco. His counterpart, Jens Lehmann stopped two of the four shots he faced, including an attempt by Esteban Cambiasso, to seal the victory.
Germany will now face Italy in the Semi-Final match in Dortmund. Italy jumped on Ukraine early, scoring off a Gianluca Zambrotta strike in the 6th minute. Luca Toni added two goals in the second half, while Ukraine missed on a number good opportunities. The Italians will play in the 8th World Cup Semi-Final in its history.
Tomorrow's matches:
England - Portugal
Brazil - France

HI England does not play Germany tomorrow it plays Portugal :) England should win over Portugal
Posted by: john r | June 30, 2006 06:34 PM
I am going for the slight underdog Portugal because I give them props for showing heart in the Netherlands game. England has Beckem who is alittle over rated, but I am going against them cause I don't like Crouch!!

FORZA ITALIA... FORZA FORZA FORZA - Klinsman better get ready to retire. I don't think he'll be jumping around like he won the world cup when Italy scores on them and wins!!!
Posted by: Roberto | July 1, 2006 05:09 AM
When Klinsman retires he'll be sitting in Rome dining at a fine Italalian restaraunt drinking your wine from the 2006 World Cup! Podolski and Krose will be eating your Lasagna preparing for 2010!

Germany is going to have a tough time. Look at how Italy played yesterday. Two of Italy's best defensive players were not playing yesterday. Also, the entire team was shaken up by the suicide attempt of ex-teammate Pessotto. If Italy's defense can hold and Buffon plays well, Italy will win. Remember - the only goal scored against Italy during this cup was by an Italian player. =\ : FORZA AZZURRI : FORZA AZZURRI :

Posted by: gaby | July 1, 2006 03:21 PM
Gaby you are retarded if the Germans paid the refs than they would of won in the first 90min. Sorry that Klose schooled the goalie and Jens is amazing.

All I care about is that Brazil is out. From here now that englandis gone I root for GERMANY! portugual is a terrible team the only reason they won was because the ref hate the brits. They said he was ecuadorian orsomething so you knew hewould hate them. So GO GERMANY!

USA should have made it this far. They don't mark up.
Posted by: Jed | July 1, 2006 09:10 PM
Argentina paid the price for poor subs and bad refs decisions! I don't know what the hell was Pekermen thinking of by taking Riqelmi off and going into defence mode which cost them the game.
He most have made lots of EU's be letting the boring Germans to win & bank balance will rise in future. This same mistake he did against Eng last year and he stated "Riqelmi was tired"...wasn't he tired against the Mexican's?
This WC has been disgrace and filled with corruption especially FIFA/Officials/ & most of that big headed Sep Blatter!

USA looked horrible, could only muster what, three shots in total. They talked about having a certain swagger, they brought NOTHING.next world cup you will be saying Donavan who? Beasley who?GO GERMANY!!!!!!

Posted by: Brandon | July 2, 2006 03:52 PM
Italy will beat Germany than France will beat Portugal and Italy will beat France and win!
Posted by: Ash | July 2, 2006 06:36 PM
all remaining teams have about equal shots at winning it all.
Posted by: david | July 2, 2006 06:39 PM
Allez les bleus!!!!
No one thought they'd get this far and they played brilliantly against Brazil (the fav)! Now all they have to do is go all the way...
VIVE LA FRANCE!!!!
Posted by: Isabelle | July 3, 2006 05:43 AM
I have to congratulate France for defeating Brazil, a favorite to win it all. I think France now has their act together and are gelling as a team. Henry in my opinion is the best striker in the world. I'm quite sure it'll be France and Germany in the final and oh what a final will that turn out to be. I say Germany keeps the cup home.
Posted by: David | July 3, 2006 08:09 AM
Italy's going strong...no one on their squad is necessarily weak and their defense is stacked. Portugal's being overlooked--they have Big Phil, Mourinho of the world stage. The thing is, I think France will dominate the center midfield with Zidane and Vieira matching up against Deco and Costinha, but then on the wings Ribery and the other winger match up against C. Ronaldo and Figo...so both games should be interesting. I think Germany will be shut down unless Klose steps up (he's recovering from injury and Podolski, the other striker, is too inexperienced)

Italy is gonna beat the Germans tommorow you'll see
Posted by: toni mazatti | July 3, 2006 05:23 PM

I'll be tuning out of the final if ITA and POR win their semi-final matches. If I want to see people faking injuries every other minute, I'll tune my TV to WWF (american wrestling for those who are not familiar)
Posted by: Keeping it clean | July 3, 2006 08:16 PM
u above me, italy doesn't fake injuries, there is a thing called gravity, so if u lose control of your legs, you fall to the ground, you're just jealous because u know they are good
Posted by: toni mazzati | July 4, 2006 03:33 AM
all of u's people are stupid, italy is gonna win, look at what they did to the Ukraine, people say that the ukraine sucks, but they have to had play good to get that far, ital is gonna take it, keeping it clean is stupid
