Comments
I've been following US soccer in the world cup since 1994 and this was not a memorable world cup. When I attended the first two games in germany I thought that they learned from their mistakes in the first game and came out strong in the second game. In the third game I couldn't believe that they relapsed back to the team I saw in the first game. What was Bruce Arena thinking? We had zero goals and hardly any shots on goal after two matches, and he still sticks with a lone striker formation? And where were the key players that were supposed to step it up and back up their big talk like Landon Donovan? He choked in one of the biggest games of his life and doesn't deserve to be captain now that Reyna has retired. My hope for US soccer to progress is that they get a more offense-minded coach who doesn't play a lone striker formation and that they appoint a clutch player like Clint Dempsey as captain. Dempsey showed his fearlessness and backed up his talk with strong play instead of being timid like some of the other players and that's the type of player that you want leading the team. If they make the right decisions with a new coach and captain then I think in the next world cup they will have another good performance like in 2002 instead of the disappointing showing of 2006.
