(Goal.com) - US Soccer (USSF) president Sunil Gulati announced today that Bruce Arena would not be offered a new contract as head coach of USA once his contract expires in December.
Gulati met with Arena for over four hours on Thursday, discussing Arena's tenure for the past eight years and also for the past 30 days. The two spoke twice this morning, before departing on amicable, yet final, terms. Arena's 8-year tenure as national team coach -- rare by modern standards -- almost made him expendable by default.
"We will begin an immediate search for someone to guide the program going forward," said Gulati, who praised Arena for what he has done for US Soccer, but who said the USSF wanted a fresh look.
"It comes down primarily to eight years being a long period. I'm not going to say we needed to change direction -- I think the direction that Bruce has set has been very, very positive. If anything we want to continue the type of progress we've made (since Arena took over for Steve Sampson in 1998)," added Gulati.
"We didn't get the results we wanted at the (2006) World Cup, but, as I've said repeatedly, Bruce Arena did not become a bad coach in three games."
Gulati commented favorably on former Germany coach Jurgen Klinsmann as a possible coaching candidate, but he did emphasize that he had not spoken with Klinsmann personally about the US vacancy.
"The search will be worldwide. We’re not restricting anyone who has an American passport or who resides in the US," Gulati said. But he did express his desire to find someone who is knowledgeable about the American soccer and sports landscape, criteria Klinsmann, who resides in southern California, fits to a tee.
Arena issued the following statement through the USSF:
"I would like to thank the players, coaches and staff who have been with the program over the last eight years. Their tireless effort has helped transform the national team program into something we can all be proud of, and I am extremely grateful for their commitment. I have thoroughly enjoyed this experience, and I would like to thank US Soccer for the opportunity and their support throughout my tenure. I am proud of how far the organization has come over the last eight years, and I am extremely optimistic about the future of the sport in our country. As for me, I am planning to take some time off to weigh my future opportunities.”
Gulati revealed that Bruce Arena turned down a coaching job abroad before the World Cup to retain his position as coach of USA. Speculation is that Arena was offered a post at an English club, but it is unclear whether or not that opportunity still exists for the former DC United manager. It is believed one opportunity Arena is mulling over is the position of head coach and director of soccer operations with the New York Red Bulls.
