Benfica: Quim “Manel Will Be Missed”
(Goal.com) - Veteran keeper Quim was the first Benfica player to mention the imminent departure of midfielder Manuel Fernandes (pic) for Portsmouth. Speaking to Portuguese radio station Renascença, Quim was bittersweet about his ex-team mate’s move to the Premiership.
"It’s a shame that he’s off as he’s a great kid, very humble, who got on well with everybody. Also as a footballer we’ll miss him as he’s a player of rare quality", explained Quim. “He deserves to be happy wherever he goes, and I think we’ll be hearing a lot more from him in the future.
As to his own situation – the goalie went from first choice to substitute under Ronald Koeman last season and Morretto was brought in to replace what the Dutchman thought was a weak link in the Encarnado first eleven – Quim was philosophical.
"I’m still willing and able and have three years left to run on my contract. This season we’ll all start from zero and I’ll do everything I can to help Benfica. If an offer comes in I’ll study it, but right now all my thoughts remain with Benfica.”
