Italy Shocks Germany Late

In a match that looked destined for penalty shootout finish, Italy grabbed two goals on the edge of extra time to beat their German hosts and advance to the World Cup final.

After Italy hit the post twice in extra time, Fabio Grosso finally broke through in the 119th minute with a twisting strike around German keeper Jens Lehmann and into the sidenetting. As the Germans frantically pushed forward to find an equalizer, Alessandro Del Piero broke away on a counterattack and made the score 2-nil.

It was a sad ending for the Germans, who had played inspired soccer throughout the tournament in front of their home fans, but never really threatened the Italian goal in this match. Germany managed only two shots on goal in 120 minutes; Italy had 10. The Italians also enjoyed a possession and corner kick advantage.

Italy will face the winner of Wednesday's France - Portugal match.

Comments

Congrats to Italy and France!!! They did it. Both team have something to prove to the world and their country-man. I just hope the referee is not one of the incompetent one we have seen so far. Germany and Portugal played well and I hope both coaches stay with the teams. They are young and I have a great spirit to take it to the next level of greatness. Looking forward to see them again in South Africa!!

That's a genniuley impressive answer.
