Thuram: Togo Has Given A Poor Image To Intl. Football
(Goal.com) - France defender Lilian Thuram has criticised the Togo Football Association for allowing a dispute with the players of the national team over allowances and bonuses, something that affected their World Cup campaign.
The West Africans made their first World Cup appearance in Germany this year and the dispute is something that did not go well with many.
The row had to be resolved after Fifa's intervention, as the world football governing body promised to pay the players and deduct the total from Togo's World Cup appearance fee.
"Togo has given a poor image to international football," Thuram said at a news conference in Lome.
"I think when a team has qualified for the World Cup it should have all these things already sorted out.
"There is already prejudice about the disorganisation of African teams and I don't think it's a good idea to reinforce this.
"Unfortunately Togo gave a bad image of the African teams and I'm very disapointed."
Togo were paired in Group G alongside France, South Korea and Switzerland and lost all three of their group matches thus making a first round exit.
