Terry Named England Captain
(Goal.com) - Chelsea captain John Terry has been appointed as the new skipper of the England national team.
A 25-year-old father of twins, Terry was confirmed today as successor to David Beckham, who reslinquished the armband after the World Cup.
Terry has won 29 caps since making his debut against Serbia and Montenegro in 2003, and he will lead the team for the first time in new manager Steve McClaren's first match in charge, a friendly against Greece on 16 August.
Beckham had captained his country for six years after being given the honour by stand-in coach Peter Taylor in 2000.
Central defender Terry was in competition with Liverpool's Steven Gerrard for the leadership role on the pitch.
And McClaren has acknowledged the qualities of both players by naming Gerrard as vice-captain.

Nice I like this guy Terry, I would of preferred Lampard or Gerrard as captian but Terry is good enough.

Terry is the ideal captain for this england team. He brings consistancy in the back for a team that is lacking health and consistancy up front. He is one of the best in the business in shutting opposing forwards down.

Good choice all around,on and off the field, solid player,a leader and not a pretty boy.

First of all, im a guy, and I dont realy think other guys are goodlooking or pretty. Thats kind of wierd. Anyway, Terry is a solid defender and an excellent leader on the field. He would let any Superstar personality get in the way of him leading the team. Either way, England will never live up to their potential and they will keep disapointing their fans. Too Bad.

Hey yosoytupapa, the pretty boy is used when a man acts femminine and fragile, what I meant is that Terry is a hard working player not afraid to get down & dirty, NOT a pretty boy,so I guess you misunderstood.

lampard? ftorres214 i think u need to re-evaluate. sure lampard is a good player, but i think he is still lacking in the leadership area. plus he just came off a poor showing in the world cup (way too many chances missed). gerrard would have been a good choice and its good that he was made vice captain. but, overall, terry was the best choice. robinson might have been another choice but i think thats because i'm also a keeper and might be a little partial. well, good luck to terry and co. in the post-beckham era.

Being that Gerrard is probably my favorite player right now, it goes as a compliment to John Terry that I think he is the perfect choice to captain the squad. Lampard is another that I have a lot of respect for, but as said above, not particularly justified as a choice following his World Cup performance. Gerrard was acknowledged with the nod of "vice captain" and would be deserving, but who better to lead by example than Terry.
I can't say that I ever see any player on the field more committed than Terry. He plays with strength and complete disregard for his own body, yet approaches the game with intelligence as well. He will be there to lead the squad from the back for years to come, and it's nice to see a player recognized as a leader for the heart he puts into the game just as much as the skill he might offer. I've never been one to agree with those that criticized Beckham as captain, but perhaps this will eliminate the distraction that those discontents have added over the past few years. There's certainly no appearance of prima donna in John Terry to find fault with.

I agree with the Terry selection. In my opinion, if everyone on england follows Terry's example of fire and determination, then the brits will avoid such a lackluster performance like they had in the World Cup. If they play like Terry, they have a good shot for Euro2008.

Terry is a solid choice to captain England. He always seems to give 110% when on the field. There would be no other choice. Now lets see if he can actually lead England to win a cup, Because that is where Enland seems to be lacking. They never seem to live up ti their expectations on the worlds stage.
