Friedel Wants Another Shutout
(Soccer365.com) - Blackburn netminder Brad Friedel has urged the team to band together for another shutout when they open UEFA Cup play at Red Bull Salzburg on Thursday night.
Rovers benefited from two penalty kick saves among a pack of big stops from the American Abroad in drawing Sheffield United on the weekend.
"We take our first clean sheet into a European game, we are going away from home and we don't want to concede," Friedel told the club website. "We'd love to nick (a win) if we can, but we don't want to go there and lose."
The former US star believes the team need to drop a gear from their usual Premiership speed to improve a weak European record in recent years.
"It is a completely different style of play, it is more strategic to be honest," he explained. "You've a home and away leg, you are counting on away goals and it is a different pace in the game."
"It is a little bit slower of a game and more calculating, but one mistake kills you," noted Friedel. "In the Premier League a mistake can kill you, but you probably get three or four chances to get it back, but in Europe they just kill the game off and that's how it is."
