Rooney: I'd Never Dive
(Goal.com) - Manchester United's England striker Wayne Rooney has claimed he would never dive because he is too honest - and because diving harms football.
The contentious issue of diving is back in the spotlight following the dramatic decent to the turf of Tottenham's Didier Zokora on Sunday - when Portsmouth's Pedro Mendes made no contact with him but was nevertheless punished by the award of a penalty to Spurs from which they scored.
Rooney insists it is not in his nature to try to con referees: "I'd never dive. I'd like to think of myself as an honest player.
"That's the way I play. I don't like diving, football doesn't need it," he told FourFourTwo magazine.
The Football Association are frustrated at being unable to take action against Zokora due to FIFA restrictions.
An FA spokesman told the Daily Mail: "We've been restricted by FIFA in the past on where we can take retrospective disciplinary action and that has been frustrating at times."

No, Rooney wiil just stomp your manhood that's much more honest - Right.

At least he didn't try to hide it & for the record that player from Portugal had it coming. The entire Portugal team should take the prize for the 2006 World Cup for dirty play & taking the most dives. They did it with Holland, then with England. Then by the game against France the Ref's already had their number & France left them in the dust. The only other team that takes as many dives as Portugal is Italy.

The only player in Italy that dives is Inzaghi, the player from Portugal was stomped on his groin, and the portuguese players are very quick and skillful, fouling them was one way to stop them,to label a whole national team as divers is a bit much.

Miro is right it's only true. Portugal & Italy are known for cheap tatics & taking dives. Sometimes the truth hurts.

A dive was the only way Italy could beat the Aussies in the world cup. I have to agree with Miro & Stan.

I have to agree. It's not at all to label anyone, it's simply that the shoe fits. Rather than Inzaghi being the only player for Italy that dives, it's quite the opposite. Those that watched Italy throughout the World Cup saw that the only play NOT to take dives was Cannavaro( Buffon excluded of course, it being his job and him being insanely good at it ). I will say that they put in a much more honest performance in the final other than the Zidane/Materazzi incident which was ridiculous on both sides. That style of play largely ruined the 2006 World Cup, and Italy and Portugal were, without any doubt to anyone that watched any significant portion of the tournament, the main offenders. Ronaldo and Figo put in some Oscar-worthy performances.
Zokora's dive was laughable and should be inexcusable in professional football. Having the discretion to give a yellow card for diving is obviously not enough, because it is such a difficult call to make at full speed during a match. Players that are found on review to be guilty of persistent diving should be subject to the same fine/suspension penalties that are doled out for foul play. It's undermining the integrity of the game, and affecting the outcome of matches.
I applaud Rooney for not diving, though I scoff a bit at calling him an honest player. He's not particularly honest, as I routinely see him trying to get away with things on the pitch. He just doesn't dive, because he is a physical player that doesn't like to go down, not because it somehow offends his integrity.

The only "questionable" call for Italy was against Australia. Whether you guys want to admit it or not Italy was the best TEAM at the world cup. They beat Ghana, Czech Republic soundly, Ukraine the same, beat Germany, who just about everyone picked to win, in a classic, and did enough to beat France in the final.

Actually Italy has a history for playing dirty & being involved in scams. I noticed you left out the fine game they played against the Americans! Lolz!

I guess it still burns everyone's S that Italy won the cup, that's too bad, especially coming from Heath, who I thought knew about soccer,Grosso was taken down twice in the same play that led to the penalty,if not taken down he had a clear chance,as for Garth, don't make me laugh,Materazzi was sent off on a simple foul and he wasn't even the last man, Australia played an hour with an extra guy and Buffon had to make one save, Italy with a man less had four clear chances?????Australia had no chance even when they had the extra man,I said Inzaghi dives because I see him every sunday with Milan,Totti was fouled more than anyone,Figo, Totti and all the other skillful players drive the others nuts and keep getting fouled, and so everyone says they dive?????.I think it bothers alot of people that Italy triumphed by playing great defense, playing smart and with heart, not the flashiest nor the prettiest soccer.Heath I do agree that Zokora"s dive was disgraceful(I'm assuming you mean the dive vs Portsmorth) ,I give credit where it's do and express dissaponitment when it's do.I praised Italy for winning the cup under their circumstances just like I praised France for beating them in sept. in euro qualifying.

That game was ugly all the way around. Remember they STILL would have won if not for the own goal. They also have a rich history of producing some of the world's best players and are always a contender in any competition.

PS Forza Italia, seems like we keep saying the same thing over and over.It still pisses people off that we won,and winning at thye end is what matters,FORZA ITALIA ALWAYS.

Italy could not even beat the Americans. Such a great team you have there!

Correct me if I'm wrong but I thought the subject of the story here is Wayne Rooney? These Italy Bafoons should take their pizza & national banter to an Italy chat as nobody posting here seems to like it or find any value in it as well. I'm sure Wayne Rooney will mature with age as he's a fine player! Go Rooney!

Let me ask you all this question. What do you think of Maradona? Phenomenal player?? He was one of the biggest cheats the game has EVER had! But people are quick to forget that. If you are going to talk, don't have a double-standard or else you're just an actor. By the way Robert, we weren't the ones who made this discussion about Italian soccer. You guys can talk all you want, use any EXCUSE you want. ITALIA WON THE WORLD CUP. DEAL WITH IT.

if a player goes to ground not taking the ball and is in your way u can choose to be fowled or not. diving can be smart. yet i dont think rooney would dive. alsoif you have the choice between a p.k. and hard shot what do u pick

TO Robbie(a real S-ole),Robert & Stan, are you guys still crying????,it's funny how you guys get so defensive when confronted, Italy won they didn't rob anybody, when they lost 3 world cups on penalties noone said anything, what a bunch of whiners & losers, this is the last post from me on this forum, all you losers can dwell in your sorry little lives,ITALY REIGNS.Its obvious there is no real intelligent chat on this forum.

Nobody here likes Italy's team or has any respect for it so why not go create an where you can gloat about all the many great things Italy has done through the ages.... the topic here is Wayne Rooney who just happens to be a very great player & he's only going to get better!

I was pleased to be able to meet Wayne Rooney & some of the other European players from various other teams in Germany for this past World Cup.Many players including Wayne told me they listen to my band's music as well as other Black & Death Metal prior to playing important matches. It's good to know that soccer & metal music go hand & hand together. Go to www.bethemoth.com tocheck out my band's site & see pictures of Wayne throwing up the horns for metal music.

I said nothing of the quality of the Italian team, I only said they dive, and they do. Anyone could see that, and everyone was talking about and acknowledging it during the World Cup. In my opinion, they were in fact the best and most consistent team in the World Cup and they showed it by becoming champions. They are some of the most talented players in the world, which is why I find it so disappointing. Players that are that skillful, not to mention many on the Italy squad are strong physical players as well, don't have any need for such theatrics. It degrades the sport I love, so I have no problem at all pointing it out about any player or team. And it's not only Italy, they were just brought up in the conversation.
Beyond that, I just found it kind of amusing that Rooney is talking about honesty. Rooney is a great player and I love the tough physical style that he plays. I like the fact that he doesn't often resort to taking dives, BUT he does plenty of other things on the field that I wouldn't characterize as honest or fair play.
