AEK upsets top-squad Milan
Athens, Greece (Sports Network) - A 32nd-minute goal from AEK Athens' Julio Cesar was all the home outfit needed for a 1-0 upset victory over Group H powerhouse, Milan in Champions League Matchday 5 play on Tuesday.
After waiting 22 CL games for a victory last time out, AEK took its winning ways into the Tuesday fixture and on the wings of superb goalkeeping from Stefano Sorrentino, the Athenians just need one more point in its match against RSC Anderlecht on December 6 to advance.
AEK defender Trainos Dellas came out on fire only one minute in, taking a Daniel Tozser corner over the bar with his head, as he stood unmarked. Milan got its chance soon after when Kaka flew down the right flank and curled a perfectly-placed cross to Clarence Seedorf, whose effort was deflected wide.
Sorrentino came up with a hat-trick of saves eleven minutes before his offense granted him some cushion with Cesar's 32nd-minute game-winner. Cesar won a free-kick outside of the 18 and bent the shot around the wall and into the back of the net without time for movement from goalkeeper Dida.
The Greek club wasn't done there, and continued to press with chances from Nikolaos Liberopoulos, who fired his opportunity wide before Cesar tried again with a far-post curler that Dida sprawled out to punch away. As the half wound down AEK packed it in and Milan couldn't get any quality chances.
Milan still sits on top with 10 points in five games, while AEK moves into second with seven. Lille and Anderlecht each picked up a point on Tuesday, battling to a 2-2 draw at the Stade Felix-Bollaert, as Lille now has six points to Anderlecht's three.
