Nicol Leaps To Twellman Defense
(Soccer365.com) - New England coach Steve Nicol had Taylor Twellman’s back after the oft-maligned striker hit a classy winner against D.C. United to lift the team into MLS Cup.
The St. Louis native turned cruelly on a Pat Noonan center, and the boss says that should end talk of disappearing “TnT”.
"That was a pure goalscorer's goal," Nicol told the Washington Post. "You won't see a better goal than that in any league."
"I must tell you, anybody saying anything negative about Taylor in big games now looks a wee bit silly."

It's just the type of player Twellman is. He's definitely not a dynamic skill player that will create his own chances. He's a poacher that is great at being in the right place at the right time and scoring those opportunistic goals. That makes him streaky. When the team is playing well and creating a lot of chances, he'll score goals. When they're not, he'll have dry spells because he's not the type of striker that is capable of doing it on his own.
So I agree, it's legitimate criticism to say Twellman is not an out and out goalscorer or the type of striker that can put the team on his back. That shoe fits and I agree with the criticism.
However, if you are willing to accept that he's not these things, you can't argue with production and if I'm a manager in MLS, I'll take his stats. As far as MLS goes, he's a pretty servicable striker.
