Platini: Golden Ball Should Go To Italian
(Goal.com) - "It's time Lev Yashin had a worthy successor", the legendary triple Golden Ball winner said.
After a lot of criticism aimed at Italian football, "Le Roi" Michel Platini remembered about his period in Italy as a Juventus player in the 80's and shared some thoughts on the next Ballon D'Or award, which as usual will be awarded from votes by a selection of the world's premier sports journalists at the end of the year.
"It would be the right thing to give it to an Italian - Platini said - history says that in the year of the World Cup it's a rule to give it to a member of the winning nation. Which is a rule I agree with." But who? Captain Cannavaro, midfield orchestrator Pirlo, or goalkeeper extraordinaire Buffon?
Platini's chosen one reveals a passion still present for his old black and white colors of Juventus: in fact, his choice turns out to be the goalkeeper. "He deserves it the most, but also Cannavaro had a magnificent World Cup. But it's time for Lev Yashin (famously the only keeper ever to win the award) to have a worthy successor", Platini concluded. The living football legend then went on to give his opinions on the various football leagues, naming the Spanish one as the "most beautiful", while the Serie A is the "hardest", and the Premier League is "the most entertaining".
