Terry Says England Are Capable Of Adapting
(Goal.com) - England captain John Terry admitted that while the national team failed to get to grips with the 3-5-2 formation in their defeat by Croatia last month, it is a system they should be quite capable of playing effectively in future.
After losing that game 0-2 with a below-par performance, England play Holloand in a friendly in Amsterdam tonight, and Terry feels the squad contains the players who should be able to adapt comfortably to different formations.
He also disputes the notion that England are not as good technically as other leading international teams.
Terry told journalists: "We all agree the formation didn't work in the Croatia game but at the same time we've all played 3-5-2 at club level - and just about every time Chelsea have switched to that system we've gone on to win the game.
"It didn't work in Zagreb but it is still in the locker for the future and we've got defenders who can play that role. On that particular night it just didn't happen.
"I've watched the game again and at times it was sloppy at the back against Croatia but, like I said, we've all played it at club level so really there is no excuse."
He continued: "It baffles me when people say other countries are better technically than us. When we look at our players and the league we play in, it baffles me because we are playing in the best league in the world.
"Okay, from the word go people are getting at each other and at each other's throats but you see people like Stevie [Gerrard] and Lamps [Frank Lampard] spraying balls around the park and showing great left and right-foot finishing.
"But there is no point saying 'we've got this player who can do this and that'. We really need to now start showing and doing it tomorrow night against Holland and onwards from there."
Regarding England's mixed start under manager Steve McClaren, Terry said: "We did have a few games where we won at the start of the season and things were going well.
"Things were on a high and as captain I didn't like what I experienced against Croatia. It wasn't nice at all.
"It's not nice whether you are losing playing in the park with your mates or in a massive game. I just hate losing no matter what I am doing. But it is the worst feeling ever when playing for your country.
"The fans get frustrated because they know we have got the squad of players to get results and go to places like Croatia and win games even though it was a tough place to go.
"I understand the fans. They were kept behind and as we came out afterwards things were spoken and shouted out. It is not nice but we can understand their frustration.
"We are feeling exactly the same as them. But they are the ones who have paid for their tickets and travelled half-way around the world supporting us and we do need to get back to winning ways and repay them."
